Press Release on the Launch of the Bakong Tourists App with VISA

On January 22, 2025, H.E. Dr. Chea Serey, Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC), presided over the launching ceremony of the Bakong Tourists App with the international card scheme VISA at the National Bank of Cambodia, Sen Sok Building, with approximately 300 representatives from government agencies and the private sector.

The collaboration between the Bakong Tourists App and VISA aims to enhance the accessibility of digital payments in Cambodia, particularly for international tourists. International tourists can enjoy a seamless digital payment experience by simply downloading the Bakong Tourists App on their mobile devices, registering for an account and linking their VISA cards issued in their home countries. The Bakong Tourists App with VISA card connection function provides an additional cash deposit method for international tourists to conveniently pay for goods and services digitally, securely and innovatively. By linking the Bakong Tourists App with a VISA payment card, international tourists can make payments via KHQR code at about 4.5 million merchants during their stay in Cambodia. This collaboration is made possible through the integration with the Foreign Trade Bank of Cambodia (FTB).

Mr. Dith Sochal, Chief Executive Officer of Foreign Trade Bank of Cambodia, said, “The NBC’s Bakong Tourists App link with VISA card allows VISA cardholder tourists to make payments seamlessly using the Bakong Tourists App to scan the KHQR code countrywide. This pioneering move is designed to facilitate cashless transactions, reduce the hassle of dealing with physical currency, especially damaged notes, and to promote the use of our own national currency, the Khmer Riel, thus strengthening our national economy.”

Mr. Arturo Planell, Group Country Manager, Regional Southeast Asia at VISA, said, “This is another milestone for the National Bank of Cambodia and VISA, and we look forward to many more as we advance digital payments in Cambodia. Last year, VISA signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Tourism to further support tourism growth, reflecting VISA’s wider commitment to driving digital and financial inclusion for small businesses in Cambodia. VISA is excited to accelerate the cashless journey of local tourism businesses through this launch.”

H.E. Dr. Chea Serey, Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, said, “At the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC), we understand the importance of staying ahead in this evolving landscape. That is why we are committed to modernizing our payment systems, whilst prioritizing interoperability and security, to meet the needs of both local citizens and businesses, as well as international travelers exploring our vibrant country. The integration with VISA now allows users to link their VISA cards, enabling effortless fund transfers and cashless payment via KHQR codes. This feature boosts efficiency, eliminates the need for cash, and enhances the travel experience across Cambodia. The launch of the “Bakong Tourists App with VISA” aligns with the Royal Government of Cambodia’s policies aimed at fostering a digital economy and an inclusive society. It strengthens Cambodia’s position as a forward-thinking nation while offering international tourists a safer, more efficient way to explore our country.
